Pomade is a type of creamy hair styling product and is an alcohol-free alternative to gel, providing a flake-free texture. It comes in water-based or oil-based formulas – the difference between the two is that one washes out easier, while the other stays for longer. The water-based formula is water-soluble, meaning that formula breaks up when introduced to water and washes out pretty easily the next time you take a shower. Oil-based formulas have a greasier feel and appearance because they contain ingredients like beeswax, petroleum, and lanolin. These formulas won’t wash out easily with water – well you know, oil and water do not mix! Oil-based pomades will also give you a shinier look.
Pomade can be used in more than one type of hairstyle – whether it be a pompadour kind of look or you like to slick it back, it will give you the look you want, with water or oil-based formulas. It will keep these styles in place and the more moisture in the hair at the time of application, the higher the level of shine. If you’re not a fan of the wet look that other products can give to hair, pomade is perfect. For messier, less-polished looks pomade will hold it in place – just use a water-based pomade in this case and apply it to damp or dry hair.
Pomade is applied in a much similar way that gel is with one major difference. Just take a small amount and let it warm up a bit in your hands by rubbing them together then work it into dry or damp hair until your desired hairstyle is achieved. By heating up the pomade, it becomes more pliable and easier to use on your hair. For a more natural look, use pomade in dry hair and for a shinier, slicker look, apply to wet hair.
