Ah the age old question: curly hair or straight hair? Many people with curly hair straighten it daily. And many people with straight hair get perms. Maybe it is a “grass is always greener” mentality. But regardless, which hair type is better? And why do certain people have curly hair while others have straight hair?
Well the first question has an obvious answer: it depends on the person. Some people hate curly hair. And others hate straight hair. It all comes down to personal preference. I do think that in movies and T.V. straight hair tends to dominate, or at least it has in the past. I think right now wavy hair is kind of the big trend. And this makes sense, it is a little of both. Not quite straight, not quite curly. Personally I envy my sister’s curly hair. But that could be just because I’m the younger sister!
Now for the second question: why do certain people have straight hair and others have curly hair? Well several things contribute to this: chemistry and genetics. Hair is composed of many proteins. Keratin is one of the most prominent proteins. And sulfur atoms are responsible for curly or straight hair. How far apart the sulfur atoms are is what effects your hair. The farther apart the sulfur atoms the curlier your hair will be.
Genetics also play a big part in determining your hair type. The genes that cause curly hair are not as dominant as the ones that cause straight hair. So if your mother has curly hair and your father has straight hair, you will probably wind up with wavy or straight hair.
And hopefully that settles the debate once and for all!
