Benefits of Using Sulfate-Free Hair Products

Stick straight hair is so last year. This year it’s all about the loops, waves, curls and twists! If you have curly hair, then you should know that there are so many ways to make your hair look A. MA. ZING. The look is back and better than ever.

And it’s about more than just the old-school, run-of-the mill at home permanent done in your grandma’s bathroom – curls of all shapes and sizes are being embraced this year. From the natural, “just rolled out of bed” hair textures, to cute curls and waves, even the sassy spiral permanents are making their way out into the world of hair fashion.

Tame the Frizz

First and foremost, when wearing curls, it’s important to know what type of products and equipment to use to keep them looking shiny and healthy.

When you dry your hair, make sure you invest in what is known as a diffuser. This little accessory attaches right onto your hair dryer, and is probably the most important piece of hair equipment you will ever use.

The reason? Diffusers are actually less damaging to your curls than direct heat from your blow dryer. It also speeds up your overall drying time and makes a huge difference in retaining your curl.

When done correctly, the diffuser will boost your hair’s volume and maximize the appearance of thicker, fuller hair. It’s super easy to use:

1. After washing your hair, apply your favorite curl enhancing styling product(s) and allow your hair to air dry about three-quarters before utilizing the diffuser.
2. Hang your head upside down and place sections of your curls into the diffuser. Move the diffuser towards your head to heat up the roots as well.
3. Diffuse all around the head until your hair is almost completely dry.
4. After your hair has completely air-dried, gently apply curl defining cream to curls.
5. Shake out hair and gently finger style your curls for more volume.

Less is More

In the case of those with a mop of curly hair, it’s important to remember that when utilizing hair product, that less is actually best.

• Shampoo: A dab the size of about one to two quarters.
• Conditioner: Smooth enough just to coat strands from the mid-shaft of your hair to the tips. In this case, it all depends on the texture of your hair: fine hair tends to get greasy with too much conditioner, while coarse, thick hair requires more moisture.
• Anti-Serum: For fine hair, use an amount about the size of a dime. With thicker hair, you can probably get away with a nickel sized dollop. Silicone based serum is designed to smooth the cuticle of the hair, which helps to prevent and eliminate frizz.

If you happen to use too much product and don’t have time to rinse it out, don’t panic! Dry shampoo is your quick fix solution. Simply sprinkle on hair and blast some cool air to make things right again. If you’re out of dry shampoo or don’t have it on hand, baby powder makes for a clever substitution.

You Go, Curl!

Because curly and textured hair frays quite easily, it’s best to make sure that you get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks. Keep in mind that curly hair can shrink significantly when wet, so have your stylist cut your hair once it’s dry to make certain that you are getting the exact cut, length and style that you want.
